If you’ve been thinking about having a TCA chemical peel, you’ve probably wondered what the chemical peel recovery actually looks like. Surely it’s not like what you see in a horror films?!
The word chemical can sound a little daunting, but a TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid) peel is simply a controlled skin treatment designed to encourage your skin to shed damaged, dull cells and reveal a fresher, brighter complexion underneath.
Autumn and winter are the perfect time to invest in a TCA peel. With less sun exposure and cooler weather, your skin has the ideal environment to heal, making it the perfect treatment to refresh your complexion before the festive season.
To help you know exactly what to expect, we’re taking you through one of our client’s chemical peel recovery journey, day by day.
Treatment Day – What Does a TCA Peel Feel Like?
Your appointment begins with a thorough cleanse before the TCA solution is carefully applied to the skin.
The application itself only takes around five to ten minutes, but during this time it’s completely normal to experience a hot, stinging or burning sensation. While this sounds intense, it is short-lived and closely monitored throughout the treatment.
To keep you as comfortable as possible, we’ll use a cooling fan whenever needed, and as soon as the peel has been applied, a neutralising solution is used to stop the peel from working further. Most clients notice an immediate cooling sensation, and the discomfort settles quickly.
Before you leave, we’ll talk you through your aftercare and exactly what to expect during the chemical peel recovery.
Chemical Peel Recover Day 1: “My Skin Feels Warm”
Once you’re home, your skin may feel similar to mild sunburn.
You may notice:
- Mild redness
- A warm sensation
- Skin feeling slightly tight
- A healthy glow
At this stage, your skin hasn’t started peeling yet, but underneath, the renewal process has already begun.
Day 2: Redness Appears

Today is when many clients notice the redness becoming a little more obvious.
Your skin may feel:
- Warm
- Slightly dry
- Tight when smiling or talking
- Glowy Skin
This is completely expected and is a sign that your skin is beginning its renewal process. Many clients can still carry on with their normal daily activities while following their aftercare advice.
Day 3: Tightness Increases

By day three, the redness settles slightly, but the skin starts to feel much tighter.
This is one of the biggest signs that peeling is just around the corner.
Many clients describe their skin as feeling:
- Tight
- Slightly leathery
- Dry
- Ready to shed
Although it can be tempting, avoid picking or pulling at any skin. Let the peeling happen naturally to achieve the best possible results.
Chemical Peel Recovery Day 4: The Peeling Stage

This is the stage everyone associates with a chemical peel. But it’s not as scary looking as you may think.
The old, damaged skin begins to gently lift away, often around the mouth, chin and nose first before progressing across the face.
Every client’s peeling is different.
Some people experience light flaking, while others peel in larger sections. Both are completely normal.
Day 5: Still Peeling

During this stage:
- Keep your skin hydrated with your recommended aftercare.
- Avoid exfoliating.
- Don’t pick loose skin.
- Continue wearing SPF daily if you’re outdoors.
Although the peeling can look dramatic, it’s simply your skin making way for fresh, healthier skin underneath.
Chemical Peel Recovery Day 6: Fresh New Skin

By day six, most of the peeling has settled and you’ll begin to see the exciting part…
Fresh, smoother-looking skin starts to emerge.
Many clients notice:
- Brighter skin
- Softer texture
- A healthier glow
- More even skin tone
While your skin already looks refreshed, remember that healing continues beneath the surface over the coming weeks.
Why Do I need a course of treatments?
The photos here show just one stage of our Martyn’s journey.
Their goal was to:
- Improve uneven skin tone
- Refine skin texture
- Reduce the appearance of fine lines
To achieve these results, he completed our recommended treatment protocol of three TCA chemical peels, spaced one week apart.
While you’ll often notice improvements after your first peel, collagen production and skin regeneration continue long after the visible peeling has finished.
For this reason, we usually recommend allowing around six weeks after your final peel to see your full results. During this time, you would be expected to follow the skincare protocol. It’s a very simple, yet effective skincare pair. The Skin Tech Blending Bleaching and Skin Tech Melablock SPF50.

Is the TCA Chemical Peel Recovery Worth It?
For many clients, absolutely.
Although you’ll experience around a week of recovery, you’re rewarded with skin that feels fresher, smoother and healthier.
Rather than thinking of it as a “chemical peel”, think of it as giving your skin a complete reset.
It’s one of our favourite treatments during the autumn and winter months because it helps repair summer skin damage, improve texture, soften fine lines and leave your complexion glowing in time for the festive season.
If you’ve been nervous about booking because of the word “chemical”, we hope seeing a real recovery journey helps you feel reassured.
The peeling is temporary – the glow is worth the wait.
